With so many people just discovering the benefits of occupational therapy, it's common to have a lot of questions about the practice. Let's explore the occupational therapy Services offered at Woodward Health in Ottawa.
Our focus is occupational therapy for adults.
When you work with our occupational therapist Marie, you'll be working one on one. You'll have the opportunity to discuss obstacles you run into in your day to day life. Together, you'll come up with strategies to be able to do what you want or need to do more easily.
In your sessions, the focus can be put on a variety of different aspects of your life. This includes productivity, taking care of yourself, leisure, your external environment, and your personal traits.
The goal is to help you do meaningful activities with more ease.
The scope of occupational therapy is really broad depending on the setting, whether that's a hospital, a school, or a rehabilitation centre. At Woodward Health, Marie is mental health focused. Some of her areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, ADHD, sensory overwhelm, parental support, and burnout. She can also work with ASD, chronic fatigue, or chronic pain.
Occupational therapy isn't only for those with a diagnosis. It's useful to help optimize everyday situations including finding work-life balance, adjust to new roles in various areas of life, improve self-identity, find enjoyable activities, set and work towards specific goals, and improve sleep.
A common symptom of depression is the loss of interest in activities that have been part of everyday life. This can affect many areas including self-care and previously enjoyable activities. Our occupational therapist will work with you to implement achievable steps to bring these activities back. If your sleep is affected, you'll also have access to support to put into place a healthier sleep schedule.
We can support you regardless of whether you're waiting for a diagnosis, not seeking a diagnosis, or don't have a condition at all. The focus will be placed on improving function in relation to what you're experiencing. This can be done with or without a label for what you're going through.
Additionally, we take into consideration that it's normal for current events to affect mental health even without a mental health condition. The practice of occupational therapy will address how your environment shapes your sense of purpose. The goal in this case is to find resources to improve your wellbeing.
Many extended health benefits plans include coverage for occupational therapy. If you're unsure, check with your insurance company to confirm coverage. Additionally, any portion not covered by insurance will be eligible for the Medical Expense Tax Credit.
In situations of being on short or longterm disability, some insurance companies may provide coverage outside of the standard amount included in the plan. Our occupational therapist Marie will be happy to speak with your insurance company to help them understand the benefits of providing you with additional coverage.
If you'd like to get started, you can book an appointment with our occupational therapist, Marie de Seve.
